McLaren Vale, South Australia
In 2004, industry experts David Gleave MW (MD of Liberty Wines), Michael Hill-Smith MW (Australia’s first MW), and John Ratcliffe (driving force behind the Oddbins retail brand), got together to taste the Australian wines available in the UK. They agreed there was a lack of character and a quality void between the mainstream inexpensive brands and the iconic premium wines of Australia.
Confident that Australia could do better and deliver quality wines showing individuality and great value, Liberty Wines and John Ratcliffe teamed up and founded Willunga 100. The first vintage was in 2005.
Their goal was to bring together a team who are dediacated to making great wines that reflect the character of the grape varieties and the area in which they are grown.
To achieve their vision of quality, individuality and value they source fruit from a range of top quality vineyards in McLaren Vale. They work with old vines and exciting varieties like Grenache and Tempranillo to produce fresh and balanced wines.
From 2005 to 2009, Stephen Pannell, recognised as one of Australia’s most dynamic winemakers, was chief winemaker. He was succeeded by Tim James in 2010, who is one of Australia’s most renowned winemakers, bringing 30 years of winemaking experience to the team.
“From its first vintage in 2005, Willunga 100's aim has been to put excitement and quality back into Australia’s lower price range…it has done just that." - Steven Spurrier, Decanter January 2011
